Hopner House on the corner of Town Hall Square and Vanaturu kael is one of the most representative merchant houses in Tallinn’s Old Town. The complex of three buildings covers several historic properties, joined in 1665 in the time of the merchant Johann Höppener. The gabled main building on the Vanaturu kael side is one of the few so well preserved diele-dornse type dwellings in Tallinn. In such a merchant house, living, business and storage rooms stood side by side, and the tall storage floors gave the building its characteristic vertical appearance. The house acquired its present overall form at the end of the 17th century. The facade shows late Gothic and Baroque layers: pointed blind niches, powerful wall anchors, a carved stone portal and large diele windows. The interior preserves a beamed ceiling, a limestone inner portal, a painted log ceiling and other historic details. In 1981-1984 the complex was restored as the Hikers’ House. Today the building houses Hopner House, managed by the Tallinn City Centre District Government, whose rooms are used for concerts, lectures, exhibitions and other cultural events.
