The greatest asset of this site was the large existing trees. In order to keep them, we tried to design a solution in which the trees would survive and the residents and workers of the surrounding buildings could use the area for recreation. We have therefore created an environment here that is as natural as possible, so that a person feels almost as if on a forest hiking trail, the best possible way to recover from the stress of the city. A wooden platform raised above ground level has been planned for the park. It rests on screw piles, so there is no risk of having to dig in the park and damaging the roots of the surviving trees. Seating of various kinds has been designed on the platform (pavilions, swivel chairs, larger seating decks and so on), giving office workers nearby the chance to work outdoors alone or in groups, and to hold smaller meetings at larger and smaller tables or in the pavilions. The terrace area is articulated around the preserved trees, with low planting typical of Estonian forests laid out beneath them. All of this brings variety to people who mainly work in an office and can step out from between four walls into this park-forest, surrounded by what feels like woodland, with the wooden platform acting like the boardwalk of a hiking trail. In addition, shallow hollows have been designed in the park area for better natural infiltration of rainwater, which also helps create even richer vegetation in the park-forest. The whole planned planting – smaller trees, taller and lower shrubs and various herbaceous plants – also adds species richness to the park, as previously only tall trees and lawn grew here. The wooden platform was also necessitated by the fact that the ground surrounding the park area had to be raised by about 50 cm. The tour lasts 30-45 minutes and is led by one of the authors of Krulli park, landscape architect Toomas Põld.
