Pirita Leisure Centre was completed in 1951 as a cinema building. Designed by architect Heiki Karro, it opened as the Pirita cinema, the first new post-war cinema in Tallinn. The early Stalinist building was more modest than the large cinema houses that followed and fitted the scale of Pirita as a recreation and residential district. The original cinema consisted of a symmetrical central section housing the auditorium and foyer, with a canopied terrace in front. Several extensions followed: in 1958 the foyer and ticket area were enlarged, and in 1962 an extension for a bookshop was completed on the Merivälja tee side. In the 1980s the cinema was converted into a novel cafe-cinema where, instead of a conventional auditorium, there were round tables and swivel chairs, and films could be watched while eating and drinking coffee. Since October 1999 the former cinema has housed Pirita Leisure Centre, with hobby groups, concerts, film evenings, exhibitions, meetings and district events.
