We explore the layered architectural heritage of Kalamaja, from century-old buildings to contemporary solutions for urban space. On the walk we look at the endurance and disappearance of architecture, the challenges of preserving spatial heritage and how to make sense of the district’s development. We look both at the conversion of industrial buildings and at the creation of new public space, discussing the balance between nature and the built environment and reflecting on what kind of heritage we are creating for future generations. The tour highlights the aesthetic value of the milieu and its sustainable development, combining respect for history with the needs of contemporary urban space. The tour is led by Aleksandr Maier, a freelance architect with a background in art education and a community and environmental activist. He is a founding member of the NGOs Miljöö ja Arengu Selts and Tallinna Looduskoostöökoda, and focuses on designing new housing and on renovation projects for historic buildings. He has experience in Estonian architecture offices and in international housing development and construction companies.
