The Vana-Lõuna tram depot is one of the most important building complexes in the history of Tallinn’s public transport. The historic main building of the depot was completed in 1936. Designed by engineer Elmar Mõttus, it was nearly 50 metres long and over 30 metres wide, and on completion accommodated 32 carriages. The industrial building with functionalist lines is simple and practical: the large gate openings, the spacious internal hall and the clear structural logic all derive from the needs of storing, maintaining and repairing trams. The building was damaged in the Second World War but was restored and is still used in its original function. In recent years the renewal of the Vana-Lõuna depot has proceeded in stages. To service the new trams, standing tracks were reconstructed and a shelter was built, and the renewal of the bogie repair hall was begun. The depot still works as the centre for storing, maintaining and repairing Tallinn’s trams, but its technical infrastructure has been adapted to the needs of the new trams.
